Day 27: Dreamscapes and Forgotten NY

Every Monday you can find me at Bowery Poetry Club. Every Monday like clockwork unless I’m at the Speakeasy. I go there for Taylor Mead, one of the last of the Andy Warhol Art Stars and Beat Generation.
Every Monday you will find me sitting at the bar. Taylor likes his Dewars and I’m usually soda with lemon. This is every Monday. Every single one.
Most of us moved here for a New York that no longer exists. We’re looking for the city that existed from the 40’s through the 80’s. There’s no more Max’s Kansas City, no more Chelsea Hotel, no more CBGB’s, live peep shows on 42nd. It’s all tame, condensed, and regulated.
But sometimes if you happen to fall into the right place at the right time you can see glimmers. Don’t get me wrong, I do love this city. I’ve met people and done things that I wouldn’t have anywhere else. I’ve played out scenes that could be movies right on these city streets. And I understand very well when someone comes up to me at a diner and says “You know Marilyn Monroe used to sit in that very spot your sitting.” what they actually mean. This city is filled with ghosts and glimmers which is one of the things that makes it great and also one of things that saddens me to no end.
But every Monday I get to see someone who still holds a part of it. Taylor lives in his own world which is something I adore about him. He once called me a “female Jack Kerouac” and when I asked him about it a week later he said “I’m 87 years old I don’t remember what I had for breakfast.”
I really love this old man and every Monday I’ll continue to see him and see ghosts of old and shimmers of new.The other night I ran into Anton Perich. Embarrassingly enough I didn’t put two and two together until I got home. Magic happens sometimes when you walk into a poetry house. These are the days I need literature most.

1.) Confession - I got to look at Taylor’s Book, “Son of Andy Warhol” I felt pretty special.
2.) Oracle - Meeting Anton Perich. For some reason meeting him felt like great change was happening.
3.) Body - Walked around
4.) Sacrifice - Eating too many meals out because I’ve been running around so much.
5.) Relinquish - A sense of urgency
6.) Inspiration - Taylor Mead and Anton Perich
7.) Structure - Photographs
